After much discussion, we decide that getting to the coast is a noble goal, but we know that there are not sufficient days to make the return trip in time for Annmarie's flight out. So our plan is that David will bike sans gear back to the car in the morning and return to the Log Cabin Resort in early afternoon, pick up his gear and drive to find the next campsite, while Monica and Annmarie bike along the lakeshore, meeting at Fairholme campsite on the far end of the lake.

While we do end up completing the plan, the day is filled with missed turns and extra miles for all.

David relished light and speedy riding back down 101, tho the traffic was ugly and loud. Rejoining the trail in Port Angeles came as a welcome relief. Passing the hazardous waste site followed by the gorgeous shore of the Strait, he wondered where the the natives we'd met at the Resort beach lived. After climbing back up to the prairie section, he begins to worry about the detour, knowing that missing it would mean backtracking many miles. Reaching an intersection with a highway name that looks like the detour road and he turns. In retrospect, it was in fact the right road for the detour, although the official turn was a bit later, and much more unfortunately, the other direction.

Several fast light miles later, David finds himself back at an ODT trailhead which looks quite familiar. In fact, familiar from earlier that morning. He'd returned to the trail several miles back. Ah well, extra miles and at least the trail segment is a lovely one.

One of the repeated section of the trail is a steep underpass. Crawling up the far side, he watches in dismay as a young cyclist careens downward and crashes into him then ditches into the bushes. The young rider is happily uninjured. "My breaks are totally busted!" he exclaims, "good thing I crashed here, I would never have made that turn at the bottom." David admonishes him to walk on all the other downhills, he does not respond, but he does walk down to the hairpin turn just above the rocky creek at this point.

A few miles past the wrong turn now on the trail, David comes up alongside a fellow tour cyclist, he asks how far to the detour. "I didn't know there was a detour," the other cyclist replies. David continues onward and finds the detour marked subtly with small posters.
